Maize is one of the most important cereal crops of the world and contributes to food security in most of the developing countries. USA is the largest producer of maize in the world. Its average annual maize production is 310 million metric tons. USA produces about 43 per cent of the global total maize production. China is the second largest maize-producing country. In 2009-10, it produced 162.5 million metric tons of maize, which is about 20 per cent of the world production. Corn is produced almost in all parts of China. The major producing areas are Hopei, Yuman and Kirin.

Brazil is the third largest corn-producing country in the world. Its average annual production of maize is 55 million metric tons.

Argentina is one of the important corn-producing countries of South America and ranks 5th in the world. Its average annual production of maize is 20 million metric tons. Most of the corn is grown in the Pampa region.

India ranks 6th in the global maize production. Its average annual production is 18 million metric tons. Maize is widely grown in UP, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, etc.
